About the film
Filmmaker Andrew Callaghan investigates the life of Kelly Johnson, a.k.a. Kelly J. Patriot, a participant at a 2021 White Lives Matter rally in Huntington Beach, California, delving into Johnson's background and beliefs.
Callaghan, who explored the MAGA movement's mobilization leading up to the January 6 Riots in his directorial debut, 'This Place Rules' on HBO, has theorized for quite some time that economic uncertainty following the 2008 financial crisis was instrumental in creating a pipeline from home foreclosure to right-wing radicalization.
Dear Kelly's protagonist, Kelly, who crusades around Southern California preaching that 'Kobe Bryant was assassinated by the Clintons,' is the poster-child of this theory. Far before qAnon came into the picture, Kelly began his descent into the conspiracy rabbit-hole after his multi-million dollar estate was seized by a private lender named Bill Joiner, who Kelly claims 'stole his home' after he defaulted on several payments.
Over the course of four years and with the help of Kelly's semi-estranged wife and children, Callaghan attempts to chronicle Kelly's descent into madness and host a mediated dialogue between Johnson and Joiner, and ultimately facilitates an emotional intervention with the Johnson family that leads Kelly to seek treatment for addiction, trauma and psychosis.
